Franck, César

(10 December 1822, Liège – 8 November 1890, Paris)
A superb organist who made lasting contributions to the secular concert repertory, Franck published 11 collections of organ works, some very large. The Six Pièces of 1868, compared by Franz Liszt to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, derive from his prodigious improvisations after services. He also composed two grand oratorios, {}Ruth (1843–1846) and Les Béatitudes (1869–1879), five cantatas, two masses, 16 motets, and five offertories.
